project 3 essay

When beginning the third project in class, I fist began by choosing five descriptive terms that I believed reflected me. In order, my five descriptive words are creative, funny, reliable, laidback, and shy. Once I knew what five terms I would use, I then began to think how I could change and manipulate each word so that it suggested its description. For instance, the first word I chose was creative; to suggest creativity I decided to place the word far in the back of my design as if it was in the distance. Using different values, shades of the same color, made it easy to show the proximity to other terms. In the next term, funny, I chose to change the scale and variety of the different letters to represent comical relief. Also, I decided to make a unique change to the letter “Y” in funny; by changing the texture of a single letter in a word, it becomes more noticeable and begins to stand out, giving it a “funny” look.
Most of my descriptive words share the same art elements and design principals; what varies is how they’re used. In the word laidback I chose to change the scale of back as if it were actually behind the word laid, giving the word depth.  Messing around on adobe illustrator has begun to expand my creativeness; I think this is mainly because it’s as simple as hitting edit undo if something isn’t the way I like it. I think it’s much easier to accommodate all the design principals such as scale, proportion, balance, unity, and variation because editing work is easy to do and nothing is set in stone. What I mean by this is that anyone can completely change their design quickly and effectively.
When I first started my design of my five descriptive words it was very bland and boring. As I kept changing my thumbnails they got more and more elaborate. The first and by far the most important thing that I changed was the hierarchy, or emphasis of each word in my design. This creates movement, or rhythm around the design which makes the eye very interested. My next task was to make the scale of each word different to one another to give the design not only balance but unity aswell. The last thing that I still have to work with is color. This will give each descriptive word even more variety and emphasis.
